Privacy Policy
Last updated: 23 June 2026
This policy explains what information What's in my Fridge ("the app", "we",
"us") collects, how we use it, and the choices you have. It is operated by
John Bell (sole trader), trading as "What's in my Fridge". If you have any questions, contact us at
hello.whatsinmyfridge@gmail.com.
Who this applies to
Anyone who uses the app. If you only use it without an account, your data stays on your
device (see "Data stored on your device"). If you create an account, the data below also
applies.
What we collect
- Account details — your email address and a securely hashed password, to sign you in.
- Your fridge data — the items, shopping list and staples you add (names, categories, quantities, locations, dates, notes).
- Photos you scan — when you scan a fridge photo or receipt, the image is sent for AI recognition. We do not keep the image after it has been read; only the items it produced are saved to your inventory.
- Chat questions — the questions you ask and the current inventory context sent with them, to generate an answer.
- Usage counts — how many scans and chat questions you've used, to apply your plan's limits.
- Device signal (fingerprint) — when you sign up we derive a non-reversible hash from standard, already-visible browser characteristics (such as your browser type, language, screen size and time zone). It is not a unique device identifier and is never shown to you or used to track you across other sites. We use it only to limit how many free trials can be started from one device (fraud and abuse prevention).
- Sign-up IP address — we record the IP address used to create your account, alongside the device signal above, for the same fraud and abuse prevention purpose, and for security.
- Basic technical data — standard server logs (e.g. IP address, timestamps) kept by our hosting provider for security and reliability.
We rely on our legitimate interests in preventing fraud and abuse and keeping the
service secure as the lawful basis for the device signal and sign-up IP address. You can object to
this processing by contacting us. We do not sell your data, and we do not use it for
advertising.
How we use it
- To provide the app's features (storing your fridge, scanning, chat, reminders).
- To sign you in and sync your data across your devices.
- To apply free/paid plan limits and process subscriptions.
- To prevent fraud and abuse (e.g. one device farming many free trials), using the device signal and sign-up IP described above.
- To keep the service secure and fix problems.
Who we share it with (processors)
We use trusted third parties to run the app. They process data on our behalf:
- Anthropic — AI provider (United States). Scanned photos and chat questions are sent to Anthropic to be processed. Where data is processed outside the UK/EEA, it is protected by appropriate safeguards (such as standard contractual clauses). See Anthropic's privacy policy.
- Supabase — database, authentication and storage of your account and fridge data.
- Vercel — hosting of the app and its API.
- Stripe — to process subscription payments. We never see your full card details.
- Resend — to send service emails (account, reminders, and replies to messages you send us). Processes your email address and the contents of those emails.
Data stored on your device
The app keeps a copy of your fridge in your device's local storage so it works offline and
loads instantly. Clearing your browser/app data removes this local copy.
How long we keep it
We keep your account and fridge data while your account exists. Scanned images are not
retained after processing. If you delete your account, we delete your associated data
(subject to any legal retention requirements and provider backup cycles).
Your rights
Depending on where you live (including under UK/EU GDPR), you may have the right to access,
correct, export or delete your data, and to object to certain processing. To exercise these,
email hello.whatsinmyfridge@gmail.com. You can also delete items in-app or
request account deletion.
Children
The app is not directed at children under 13 (or the minimum age in your country), and we do not knowingly collect their data.
Changes
We may update this policy; we'll change the "last updated" date above and, for significant changes, notify you in the app.
